Creative Family Fun in Nature!

As park stewards, we rarely get a chance to chance to sit quietly in the park and experience the sounds and sights in a leisurely, non-maintenance way. We thought we should, so board member Carrie Worthen and supervolunteer Danielle Baker (both with backgrounds in fine art), initiated a monthly outdoor “Draw Day” at Marian Harlow Grove. They invited with Christoper Versackas of Bring Your Own Pen (BYOP) to co-host, he runs the wildly popular “Drink and Draw” nights at Stories Books and Cafe. Our park event is purely about fun too. Everyone that bumps into us loves the idea of a fun, family event that is FREE and nature-based. We welcome dogs too, of course!

All Abilities Welcome!

One of our favorite parts of Draw Day (besides all the pups) is when families and groups discover our group while hiking. After asking what’s going on, they often want to join - and do! For those without paper, we have complimentary sketchbooks, and boards with sheet paper. Everyone can borrow the communal supplies we have available: markers, colored pencils, crayons, colored charcoal, and pastels. We’ve had folks join who claim they can’t draw (but clearly can), to pro-level watercolor artists with easels and paints in tow. To us, as long as you’re making marks on paper and experimenting with color, you are an artist.

Kids are so excited about getting to draw outdoors. They know the fun of drawing that many of us have forgotten. We hope Draw Day is a way to reconnect with how it feels to take life slow and simply observe, imagine, and create.
